This Movement Mandala, unlike all the others, does not have an obvious pulse. There is no beat being marked by a percussion instrument. When watching the dancers perform this one live, I always wonder how they manage to stay together and to stay linked to the music. Dancers are amazing beings. Hug a dancer!

This was the first of the Movement Mandalas. This one has a consistent pulse, as most of the Movement Mandalas do. But if you listen carefully to the whole piece you’ll hear the duration of each pulse change over time.

A Meeting Like This

This one was created in under eight hours during a late winter night in 2006. Originally for a short film, this piece was built by layering long, drawn-out violin and viola parts over each other and then a little tremolo melody line which dances around, on the top, a sad sort of cherry. I still enjoy the change at the end. When dealing with such a limited and simple palate of colors, little things can create high drama. Please listen to find out what I am talking about.

This piece was the last of the first set of Movement Mandalas. The choreography for this dance was originally created as a solo. And so the music moves in a simple and direct way. There is grounding bass throughout as most of the Movement Mandalas required. This piece was a little different from the rest because the choreographer and I were both thinking about the recent 9/11 disaster as we created it. I released the first 8 Mandalas in 2002 as an album titled, Movement Mandala Music. You can purchase a hard copy or download it at CDBaby.

I composed this piece in the late 1990′s while working with choreographer Murray Spalding on an ongoing series of meditative dance pieces. This is one of my favorites. It is minimalist and also happens to use a 12-tone row of sorts. There is a great video of the dance recorded at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. on my watch page.

4 Moments part 3 – Cutting

Cutting is the third of the 4 moments for solo piano.

The feeling is lonely. It is sparse, simple and delicate. I would say it is a haiku of sorts, but it is a little too long to be a haiku.
